Grey Porcelain Outdoor Tiles

How to lay porcelain pavers?

The first question you need to answer is what surface type are you installing the porcelain pavers onto as the installation method will slightly differ.

If you are laying your porcelain paving on a hardcore sub base then you will need to lay them on a 5:1 sharp cement and cement mortar mix, please note to remember you must apply a slurry primer to the underside to each porcelain slab as you lay.

If you are laying onto a concrete base, then you can simply lay the porcelain paving slab using a tile adhesive and a grooved notch tiling trowel.

How thick should slurry primer be?

You should know at this stage that Melton Stone highly recommend using a slurry primer when installing any outdoor porcelain paving tiles.

But how thick should slurry primer mix be?

When mixing your slurry primer, we advise that the mix should be something like a good old fashioned pancake batter. Not too thin and watery as it will be messy and have no substance, but not too thick and dense as you will not be able to spread the slurry over the full back of the porcelain slab.

What are the best grey porcelain tiles for my garden?

Porcelain paving tiles are becoming a very popular choice for homeowners in the UK as they are extremely hard wearing and have an anti-slip surface texture in both wet and dry conditions. You will not be surprised to hear that grey is currently our best-selling colour of outdoor porcelain paving slabs.

When it comes to choosing which grey tiles you want for your outdoor patio area there are a few key things you should consider, if your garden is south facing and has a lot of sun then a darker grey slab maybe a better option to avoid any glare.

However, if you have a north facing garden that struggles to get much sunlight then a light grey, sliver or even white porcelain paving maybe a better option to brighten up your patio space.

Are porcelain paving tiles slippery?

Porcelain tiles are an excellent choice for a patio or garden area because they have an anti-slip surface texture meaning they are not slippery in either wet or dry conditions.

Outdoor porcelain tiles are fast becoming the number one choice for patio areas in the UK as they are anti slip, extremely hard wearing and scratch resistant.

How to apply a slurry primer?

When installing porcelain paving slabs there is one process that must be done prior to laying them and that is applying a slurry primer to the underside of the slab.

Slurry primer is to be mixed in a clean tub or bucket and mixed with either an electric whisk or by hand with a shovel.

Once the slurry is mixed to a nice soft texture like a pancake better then it is ready to apply to the tile. The slurry can be applied with either a builder’s trowel, brush or sponge.

Please note always remember the key term – wet on wet. You need to place the tile with the wet primer on, directly onto the wet mortar bed. Do not let your slurry primer dry out before installing it.
