What are tumbled cobbles?
Tumbled cobble stones are similar to a manufactured brick in shape, however, they have smooth edges and corners and are slightly larger in size. Tumbled cobblestones make elegant driveways while adding a weathered natural appearance. Tumbled cobblestones make stunning patios and walkways around your home, they can also be used as a border stone around paved areas such as Indian sandstone and Limestone.
What does tumbled mean?
Tumbled means that each slab or cobble is hand-dressed then undergoes a process where it is gently tumbled in a rotating drum supported with granite sand and water. This process softens sharp and rough edges, giving it an attractive, aged, weathered appearance that looks beautiful in UK homes and gardens.
How do you lay cobble edging around a patio?
Step 1: Mark the Edging Layout. Measure and mark your project area.
Step 2: Dig a small trench for the Cobble Setts. Using a shovel, dig a trench along the area you marked.
Step 3: Add a minimum of 100mm mot type 1 hardcore and compact.
Step 4: Lay each individual cobble stone on full mortar bed of 5:1 sharp sand and cement. Top tip…dip each cobble into a tub of slurry primer before laying.
Step 5: Grout the cobbles using sand a cement mortar or specialist product such as Flowpoint. Do not grout cobbles using a brush in jointing compound.
What is the best grout for cobbles?
When installing natural stone cobbles it is crucial that you finish the job correctly using the right grout. We highly recommend using either sand and cement mortar or a specialist product such as Flowpoint to ensure the joints set completely solid. Please do not use brush in resin based jointing compounds when grouting cobbles as they break up over time when pressure washing.
Are cobblestones expensive?
If you are in the market for cobble stones you will see that they are not the cheapest method of hard surface landscaping, however the finished appearance is stunning so in our humble opinion natural cobble setts are worth every penny!
Are cobble stone driveways more expensive than concrete block paving?
Yes, natural stone cobble stone driveways are more expensive than standard block pavers. This is due to the manual process in the production, from excavating the natural stone then, cutting and processing during the manufacturing.
Concrete products are cheaper and quicker to produce. However, please note concrete products will fade & delaminate over time and the aggregate of the concrete block will show through.
Natural stone is much more harder wearing and gains character as it weathers over time.
