How to make fireplace black?

If you wanted to give your limestone fireplace that deep rich black colour, then we would highly advise sealing the slab. We advise installing the limestone hearth, then performing a thorough cleaning of the stone. We then would suggest that you leave the slab to dry prior to applying the black limestone sealer, these are extremely easy to use and simply need applying with a brush or roller.

What to grout my fireplace with?

Natural stone fireplace hearth stones are usually created with either 2 or 3 slabs meaning there will be a grout line that requires filling. The key here, is to choose a grout that compliments the stone colour that you have chosen. This is all down to personal preference in terms of how subtle or stand out you wish to see your grout line. How to lay limestone fireplace hearth?

Here are some tips for laying a fireplace hearth:

Choose a solid surface
The hearth should be laid on a solid surface like laminate or floor boards, but not on carpet. If you have carpet, you can either pull it back or use the hearth as a template to cut it.

Use a wet sand and cement mix
Mix a 6:1 ratio of wet sand and cement, and lay the hearthstones on top. Use a spirit level to make sure the hearth is flat in all directions. Leave a 4-10 mm gap between the stones for pointing/grouting. The width is a personal choice on what you wish to see.

Consider the floor level
When bedding down the hearth, you should consider the finished floor level of the room.
