Indian Sandstone paving, Kandla Grey, Raj Green, Rippon Buff

This is a question we often get here at Melton Stone from our customers. In this blog post we will discuss calibrated Indian Sandstone so you have more information about this stunning product.

What is Calibrated Indian sandstone?

Calibrated Indian Sandstone is paving slabs that have gone through a machining process to make sure that they are a regular and even depth. This will make them easier for the professional landscapers to lay.

As with any natural Material, it will be very rare that they will stick to a neat uniform structure, this means that there will be significant variations that can occur from one paving slab to the next therefore calibrated paving will make sure that all the slabs have a regular thickness.

The main difference when laying non calibrated paving slabs and calibrated paving slabs is the mortar bed, with calibrated Indian Sandstone the bed can be all one level and the paver will install with ease, having a non-calibrated paving slab the landscaper will have to correctly measure the bed depth and make sure that each mortar bed is different depending on each paving slab to ensure a level surface.

For experienced landscapers, this doesn’t phase them as much as they have the experience in laying different types of pavers, however for the DIY homeowners with less experience having these different depths it will obviously take more time and extra care to install these paving slabs.

Having calibrated paving patio slabs ensures that the thickness variations to a minimum, which allows for an entire uniform bed underneath the patio area which saves the landscaper extra time which is required to check individual paving slabs.

How are paving stones calibrated?

The paving Slabs go through a calibration process before getting packed for shipping, this process is the slabs are put through a strip mill which is essentially a series of closely spaced saw blades which cut the edges of the stone leaving them a fairly consistent thickness around 22mm in depth.

If you’re planning on laying your patio slabs yourself, here at Melton Stone we always recommend using a layout guide which can be requested through our email sales@meltonstone.co.uk and of course all of our Indian Sandstone patio paving slabs are 22mm Calibrated.

We stock all of the popular colours including Kandla Grey, Raj Green and Rippon Buff. Should you have any questions please feel free to email us on sales@meltonstone.co.uk or give us a call on 01482 688008 and we would be more than happy to help!
