Caring for your Outdoor Paving
So, you’ve taken the exciting step of transforming your garden. After a few weeks of organised chaos, you can finally admire the finished result. Now that you’ve been enjoying your new outdoor space, it’s only natural to want to keep it looking as fresh and beautiful as the day it was completed. But how do you maintain that “new garden” feel?
Because Porcelain and Sandstone have different properties, each requires slightly different care. Here’s a simple guide to help you keep your paving in top condition:
Porcelain
Porcelain paving is wonderfully low-maintenance. Its non-porous surface makes it naturally resistant to scratches and stains—plus, there’s no need for sealing. A quick sweep or a rinse with the hose is usually all it takes to keep it looking pristine. Less time cleaning means more time to relax and enjoy your garden.
Sandstone
Sandstone is a natural material, so it needs a bit more care. Avoid using any cleaning products that contain acid, as these can cause rusting on the slabs. Instead, opt for a simple warm, soapy water solution:
1. Sweep away any loose debris.
2. Pour the soapy water over the surface.
3. Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly
4. Allow the surface to dry completely
Sealing your sandstone can help protect it, but this comes down to personal preference. For tougher stains, use a paving cleaner specifically designed for sandstone.
A Note on Pressure Washing
Whether you have porcelain or sandstone, always use a low-pressure setting and a wide nozzle when pressure washing. This helps prevent erosion and keeps the joints intact.
