What is Flowpoint and How Do I Use It?

One of the questions we get in the customer care office is what is Flowpoint and how do I use it from both homeowners and landscapers alike.

What is Flowpoint?

Flowpoint is a rapid-setting flowable grout that is applied to the paving as a wet slurry mix, it is simple to apply and when applied correctly can last for many years to come!

Flowpoint is a non-permeable cementitious-based grout meaning that it doesn’t allow water to pass through once set.

With a setting time of as little as 15 minutes at temperatures of 20c, the hardened Flowpoint paving grout is ready to be cleaned after 30 minutes. After 1 hour the paving is ready for foot traffic and after 4 hours is suitable for vehicular traffic after 4 hours.

Ideal for both domestic and commercial paving projects, Flowpoint rapid-setting flowable grout can be used with all types of paving materials including, Indian Sandstone Paving, External Porcelain Paving Slabs, Limestone, Slate, Natural Sandstone cobbles, Concrete and granite setts.

What is Flowpoint made from?

Flowpoint is a cement-based product that is made from a mixture of cement and a blend of special aggregates. Flowpoint comes as a premixed, dry product add the specified amount of water and mix for 3-5 minutes until smooth for it to be ready to apply to your paving project.

How Long does Flowpoint last?

When applied correctly, Flowpoint flowable grout can last beyond 20 years without ever needing the paving to be regrouted.

How Long does Flowpoint take to set?

The setting time of Flowpoint entirely depends on the temperature but at 20c it is roughly 15 minutes. The hotter the temperature the faster the Flowpoint flowable grout will set. It is best to avoid applying Flowpoint on a very hot day and in the midday sun, it is best to apple early morning or late afternoon when the temperature is falling.

When applying Flowpoint, you must keep the area damp to stop the grout from hardening. Use a rubber squeegee to remove the grout from the top of the pavers immediately after application.

Two washes are then needed. Before the initial wash, place the pads of your fingers into the jointing grout to see whether it has set enough. If you can see fingerprints in the grout, it is too soon for a wash-off. Once there aren’t any indentations, begin a gentle wash off with a sponge or hose avoid hitting the joints and focus more on the paving slabs, Following the final wash you want to see clean water alone running off the slabs.

Can you use Flowpoint in the rain?

In short Yes, however ensure that the paving joints are not filling up with rainwater. Applying Flowpoint flowable grout on a damp day is actually beneficial as it will stop the wet slurry from setting too quickly,

Before applying Flowpoint the surfaces of the paving and joints should be pre-soaked. You must keep the whole area damp until you have finished applying. If it is not lightly raining then spray the paving with a light mist.

Does Flowpoint prevent weeds?

Yes Flowpoint rapid-setting flowable grout is an ideal option for preventing weeds from growing between paving, just make sure that the joints are fully filled and there are no gaps or cracks.

How do I use Flowpoint?

  • Clean the paving surfaces and joints from and debris or pooled water
  • Pre-soak the paving joints and surfaces with clean water to ensure they are damp
  • Add the specified amount of water to a clean bucket and add the Flowpoint Mixture.
  • Using a paddle mixer, mix for 3-5 minutes until the consistency is smooth and free of lumps.
  • Ensuring that the area is still damp apply the mixture immediately by carefully forcing the Flowpoint into the joints using a rubber squeegee.
  • Move the Flowpoint slurry grout constantly around the surface to top-up the joints where the mortar has sunk.
  • Us the rubber squeegee to remove as much of the paving grout from the surface of the slabs, still keep the surfaces constantly damp to prevent the grout from hardening on the surface of the paving.
  • Once the grout is touch dry use a brush and lots of water or a sponge machine to remove any excess grout from the surface.
  • The area is ready for foot traffic after 1 hour and vehicular traffic after 4 hours.
